The fabric keeps gathering up. How do I solve this?

Correct needle for the fabric (knit or woven? or non-woven?) and
washaway stabilizer or paper above and below the seam would be my first tries.

Are you hand basting it carefully before attempting to
machine stitch it? Since faux suede has a nap, it would
rend to creep unless very well anchored with short basting
stitches, along the entire length of the zipper.

I used a Teflon zip foot as well as hand basting when I did one in faux
suede... Worked out nicely, but you do need to take that extra bit of
care. (NOT an FTL sewing job, Beverly! ;) )

Aaack, I meant to write "tend" not "rend". I don't know why
they put the "r" right next to the "t". ;-}

Indeed, one of those special situations which *requires* the
extra care and time to baste properly.
