New to sewing.. need a little help please

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to sewing.. well new to sewing clothes.. This will be my first time making a dress and I picked a simple pattern.. I though it was simple anyway.. I bought a pattern that can be made in sizes 12, 14, 16, and 18 but I'm scared to cut the fabric because it looks like the skirt part of the dress pattern is not going to line up right.. the front part of the dress is going to be shorter than the back.. is it supposed to be that way? Am I not \"reading\" the pattern correctly? On the 2 skirt pattern pieces there are small lines with 12, 14, 16 and 18.. Is that where I'm supposed to cut or do I cut all the way to the bottom? I am BEYOND confused :o/

Any help will be appreciated so much!!

You might want to start by sharing the pattern number and which version you are planning to make..

The lines on the pattern pieces are the cutting lines for each of the sizes. Cut the entire pattern on the cutting lines for --your-- actual size (the size you chose based on YOUR MEASUREMENTS, not your ready-to-wear size). Vogue has good directions for proper measuring here:

Or, you can use the various size lines to create a more custom fit by tapering from one size to another. If, for instance, you have size 18 (42 inch) hips, but size 14 (28 inch) waist, taper from the full hip (usually about 9" below the waist) size 18 line, to meet the size 14 waistline line. Same applies to modifying for bust-to-waist differential, but that's trickier depending on the pattern.

If this is your first effort at sewing a dress, buy some really inexpensive fabric (of approximately the same type/weight) and make up a practice garment first. Then you can determine where you need to make further adjustments before cutting into your good fabric.

Now I just need to figure out how to actually sew it all together.. I know nothing about the different stitches or even if my sewing machine does different stitches..
