Hello everyone,

I am working on a pair of slippers. They are a single piece, crocheted
in spiral round. I am having problems sorting out how to work the top part
of the slipper.

You make your chain and work both sides of the chain to make the oval. You
do inc at each end on each round for about 2ins/5cm. then one round of no
increase. Then five rounds making a dec at one end to shape the heel.

Then:
"At the other end of the oval, work in rows of sc back and forth on the 18
stitches on either side of the central stitch for 10cm/4ins, joinning the
beginning and end of each row to the sides of the slippers with sl sts.
This forms the upper part of the slipper."

I understand working back and forth and sl st at the end of a row, but I am
unsure exactly how (or where) to start the back and forth as my needle, at
this point, is in the center of the top of the work. Also, I am not quite
understanding the sl st at the beginning of the row.

This pattern was originally published in Spain in 1984 and translated to
English in 1985. It is from "The Book of Crochet From Beginner to Expert:
The Best Crochet Book for You" by Marinella Nava.

Thanks in advance,
Christy

Christy i must reread this twice to see where the problem is , but
one fact jumped to my eyes
caught the remark ....as my needle at this point is ,,,,, Crochet is
not knitting !!! one of the possibilities crochet has IS NOT having to
Work further in the same row [ modern Free form knitting also shows
this ability but let`s put that aside now] , you can cut your thread
[ or leave it , just knot the stich till you get back there] take a
new strand and just push your needle wherever you feel or need to do
it !!!!

Mirjam,

Sorry for the confusion. The pattern is worked in the round in an oval
shape and the top center of the work is where the round ended. The back and
forth is to begin here.

Christy you didn`t confuse me i just wanted to get the proper idea
about what it was that puzzeled you ,
you can of course follow Tamar`s advice and just crochet along the
edge and get to the point where you have to crochet back and forth ,
or take my idea of cutting thread and start at the new place , both
are equal, and a matter of how each of us learned her crochet.
I understood the Oval crocheting [ shape of leg ] , come to think of
it THIS KIND of House shoe was my First ever crochet project ,, taught
to me when i was 11 , while visiting my Oma in Holland .
Now to your Dillema , the Slip st is done to connect that row to the
sole of the house shoe ,,
It might be useful for you , to make a kind of rough sketch or even
cut out the pieces from newspaper and put them together ,,, than you
will see where it goes and why ,,

Mirjam,

Sorry it has taken me a while to respond. It has been a long weekend. I
may end up having to make my slipper in two seperate pieces. I was hoping
to work it as one piece as the pattern says. I have put it down for now,
and I am working on a layette set.

Thank you for your help with this. : )
