How goes the "build a spinning machine from scratch" project?
I'm spinning commercially-prepared Romney tops, worsted, quite fine.
Eventually it'll be 3-ply for socks. I can cram 4+ ounces onto each of
my bobbins so that'll be a lot of sock yarn. I'll use my jumbo
electrificated (sic) plying head to do the plying; all the plied yarn
should fit on it.
I'm planning to swatch, do some math to figure out what diameter hanks I
need to wind off to produce self-striping yarn.
Or I may discover I'm halfway to another sweater and keep spinning!
I have all the spinning done for my Aran, just need to finish the second
sleeve and darn in the ends, then scour the thing out. It's quite
obvious where I changed hanks - I was more patient with the scouring out
of the yarn with some hanks than others. Not only is there a difference
in the degree of dirt, but the hanks that spent longer in the bath
bloomed more than the ones that only got sketchy scouring. I may learn
a hard and valuable lesson if I don't get all the dirt out when I scour
the sweater: do all the spinning before commencing to knit, and scour
all the yarn at the same time, on the same terms.
