Do any of you lovely yarnheads have suggestions as to where I can find
mitered square instructions for crochet? I can't seem to write them out in
any sort of sensible manner myself and I have a young newbie in need of
clear instructions so she can learn to make a simple-but-fancy pillow set
for her first apartment. I've Googled and Googled but I'm just not seeing
what I'm looking for. Any book references or something I can peek at?

Decide how big you want your square, work out how many stitches that is in
the yarn you're using to give the fabric you want. Double this and add 1.
I'd use half trebles (half doubles for those over the Great Shining Water)
and work into the back "bump" of the chain stitch to give an easy edge for
working into on the next square. *On every other row work to the middle
minus 1 and then work 3 together.* Repeat from * to * until 1 stitch
remains and then pick up along the edge of the square, either with the same
yarn or different (obviously!) half the number you started with. If using
different yarn use the last stitch as the first loop of the new square and
work over the end (to avoid having ends to sew in) Add one extra stitch by
working 2 into the last stitch, then chain the rest to make the number up to
the same as the first square. Repeat until strip is long enough. I'll work
out what happens next if she gets that far!!

Ok, please ignore previous answer worked from a Tunisian crochet mitered
squares formula before enough thought. Here goes again:
Decide how big you want your square, work out how many stitches that is in
the yarn you're using to give the fabric you want. Double this and add 3 (2
turning chain which DON'T count.) I'd use half trebles (half doubles for
those over the Great Shining Water) and work into the back "bump" of the
chain stitch to give an easy edge for working into on the next square. *On
each row (including foundation row) work to the middle stitch minus 1 and
then work 3 together. Turn with 2 ch which again DON'T count and don't use*
Repeat from * to * until 1 stitch remains and then pick up dc (USA sc)along
the edge of the square, either with the same yarn or different (obviously!)
half the number you started with. Add one extra stitch by working 2 into
the last stitch, then chain the rest to make the number up to the same as
the first square plus 2 (for turnign chain as before). If using different
yarn use the last stitch as the first loop of the new square and work over
the end (to avoid having ends to sew in)
Repeat until strip is long enough.
HTH and is easy to understand

You wouldn't say that if you'd seen me after I sent that first message
trying to make it work. Things got quite heated here for a while and DH was
quite bewildered!!
