Paperclips and bobbipins work for this also. For stitch markers I use
jump rings (jewelery-making stuffs) that come 100 to a bag for less
than a dollar; when I was in braces I found the alignment rubberbands
to be more useful as stitch markers and slingshots than for their
intended purpose.
That being said, I do have some proper stitch markers, but I don't
often use them as I find them to be large and "sticky" when I slide
them along the needles. I carry around a packet for friends who
discover they need a marker but can't imagine using something as tacky
as a jump ring :D

The markers on my NYCO are pieces I cut off of two different colored
drinking straws (new from the box). They would not work on very large
needles but they work on this project.

I don`t use it as markers , mine are looped embroidery threads ,,,, i
used it instead of a safety pin to hold stiches that had to come off
the needle ,
