We live in what some folk might call "the country" (a small island off
the coast of mainland Orkney) but it's far from silent - waves breaking,
wind blowing (howling at times!), seagulls mewing, curlews calling,
seals calling, cattle lowing, sheep and goats bleating etc. And I was
brought up in the High Peak district of Derbyshire - bleak moorlands
with birds calling and streams tinkling over rocks.
But I know what you mean Miriam - it's a very special sort of silence;
no mechanical sounds, no interference by sounds from radio and/or TV,
just the sounds of Mother Nature.
