People's anger is being directed against our government because
most of that cost is tax. For many years each successive government has
treated the motorist here as the milch cow. When our petrol cost just over
96 pence per litre 61.3 pence of that was tax. See:

This is why there are protests about reducing the amount of tax levied on
it. The percentage of tax levied at the moment by the government stands at
over 69% according to the latest reports.
The other problem is that the number of crops now being grown for use as
bio-fuels is creating a world shortage of food.
