I used the long weekend to finish a cotton top (knit in Knit 1 Crochet
2 Cotonade yarn.) i've been working on this for YEARS. I picked up
the neck stitches, joined shoulders, picked up sleeve edgings, and
only have the side seams to sew. It's too short. I measured it and
it is right for the pattern, but the pattern has a finished length for
all sizes of 21" which on my large size just reaches my waistline.

I am knitting a lacy edging to stitch on the bottom edge which may
help.

What I wanted to know was - has anyone cut off the ribbing and cast on
stitches and successfully knit the other direction for a bit? I have
plenty of yarn.

Hi Alison,

This is something I've never done, but I'm trying to figure out how to
do it. Why don't you knit a swatch and try it on a small scale,
before taking scissors to the sweater. What I'd do is make the swatch,
insert a needle or a lifeline above where you planned to cut, and then
cut away. I still can't figure how to knit the other direction, but
maybe it would become clear once you had it on the needles.

Alison, I have indeed, when you cut very carfully and take a couple of
rows out, I have renewed the ribbing of Otto's sweater that had holes in
it. Holes from welding....:=(( It does work, at least it did for me at
the time

I have done it when puttng on a new ribbing (repairs - don't ask) but I
don't know if it would be a smooth transition if this top is knit in
something like stocking stitch. Perhaps you might need to insert a band
of pattern stitching to cover the transition, otherwise it should work.

I've done it on stockinette and I wasn't thrilled with the end result. It
works out much better if you add a ribbing, or an entirely different stitch.
