I think the markers were probably to show where she had to increase.
If you crochet in a circle and don't increase every so often, you'll
get a tube (basket). To make a flat circle, you have to increase
six or seven stitches in every round. If you space them evenly, you
get a circle. If you cluster them in two locations opposite each other,
with a straight space between them, you get an oval.
"Wonder Cord" sounds like it ought to be a brand name for macrame cord.
Hobby departments might carry something like it. Also you could look
at rug yarn brands in places like JoAnne's.
