I saw a picture of mittens in a catalogue where the child sized mitten was
attached to the adult mitten as if holding hands. Has anyone seen a pattern
anywhere for these, or would you say I need to knit the two pair of mittens
and then sew one large & one small together in holding hands positing?

Try googling "lovers' mittens", with and without the apostrophe.

Here's a link to the "hold my hand" mittens I saw recently at Chasing
Fireflies http://www.chasing-fireflies.com/prodinfo.asp?number=23446&top=
The also have a girls sweater with attached mitten pockts, very
cute :)
Good luck :)
