The best thing I have seen made with novelty yarn was fake hair pieces for
Halloween. The yarn was added to a fancy barrette to make pony tails or pig
tails. Kind of cute for the folks with the short hair styles.

Not only are the specialty yarns had to work with in knitting or
crocheting they usually have to be hand washed and laid flat to dry. I
am not so sure the younger people would take the time to do it.

Fun fur can be fun. I enjoy some of the projects I've crocheted in the
past and knitted.
Try experimenting mixing it with regular yarn, you will be surprised.
The best advice I saw is to use larger needles and hooks. I found it
is next to impossible to keep a tight tension on it without GOING INSANE.
Don't give up on it. You can find some good deals on them.

marthahastoknow,
Crocheting with Fun Fur is difficult even with simple patterns. Just
keep going ... the furry stuff hides your mistakes.
